A little bit about Laura . . .
Laura graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in Chemistry Education. After working in a lab to develop a portable mass spectrometer and gas chromatograph for field use, Laura realized that she would not be happy doing research for the rest of her life because she wanted to work with teenagers. People who don’t know Laura well are often surprised to hear that she is a chemistry teacher because she doesn't seem to fit the "scientist" stereotype: Her favorite color is hot pink (as evidenced by her hot pink lab coat), she teaches aerobics classes part-time, and she loves to sew girly aprons and wear them while baking delicious desserts. Yet, Laura also loves completing a tricky acid base titration and reading the magazine Chem Matters.
Two more of Laura’s passions are travel and community service, and she likes to combine them whenever possible. She taught English and Special Education in Mukono, Uganda in 2007 and lived and volunteered at an orphanage for people with disabilities in Los Planes, El Salvador in 2008. Next on her wish list of places to visit are the Middle East and India.
Laura’s husband, Sam, is a Navy Engineer, and his job is what brought them to San Diego. Now Laura never wants to leave! Laura loves being part of such a unique and vibrant school. Laura is passionate about helping students who may be intimidated by science see the real-world applications all around them and feels lucky to work at a school that encourages her to teach "outside the box."
When Laura isn’t teaching, you most often find her tap dancing, devouring a good book with a mug of hot cocoa, or watching Seinfeld with Sam.
